CLOSE ENCOUNTERS
WHAT!! More shorts!! Yes, you fool, but it’s not for ages. Britain’s biggest competitive international short film festival, Encounters, celebrates its 15th birthday this Autumn (17-21 November) and returns to Bristol’s Watershed with another glorious panoramic roundup of the best of the world’s cinematic shorts. The five day fest (running from Tuesday to Saturday) will present a bonanza slice of international shorts, screening over 300 new films from 31 countries including over 50 premieres, with education and training from respected industry professionals, and an array of special guests, parties and hotly contested awards.
The line up of special guests this year has yet to be completely finalised, but guests so far confirmed include: 69 year old Russian animation master Andrei Khrzhanovsky presenting a selection of work which was banned for over 20 years; Oscar winning shorts director Andrea Arnold, New York experimental filmmaker Jem Cohen, and documentary and Portishead music video director John Minton.
We’ll keep ya posted on the who, what and where nearer to the date.

We love Skype, you love Skype, our Mums love Skype – now TBWA won Skype. Skype has appointed Wolff Olins, TBWA and Rapp to collaborate on the development of its brand campaigns and global CRM programme. “These are exciting times for Skype and it’s essential we communicate the Skype experience effectively on a global scale,” said Neil Stevens, VP & GM of Skype’s consumer business. “As a pioneering brand, we believe we have selected the right partners to make Skype a highly respected and well-known brand everywhere.”
“Although a relatively young company, Skype is fast becoming an iconic global brand,” said Matt Shepherd-Smith, CEO of TBWA. “We look forward to taking on our role within this.”
“Skype has the ability to transform the way people around the world connect,” added Ije Nwokorie senior strategist at Wolff Olins. “We are delighted to be a partner on that journey.”
Marco Scognamiglio, CEO of Rapp said “Skype is one of those brands any agency would love to work with - exciting, evolving and with tremendous potential for growth.”
The Skype’s the limit (groan)TINY MAN EXPLODES BIG PIANO

Pulse Films, one of the UK’s leading talent management and integrated-content production companies, has today announced its creative content partnership with happy-go-luck ivory-tickling pixie Jamie Cullum. The three-year deal, the first of its kind for Pulse Films, will initially see the multi-media prodco working with the artist to create a full content package around the launch of his new album The Pursuit.
Pulse is working closely with Jamie and his creative director Marc Silver to produce a full content package which includes music videos, an album promo, viral materials, the album artwork, stage design, merchandise, web design and live visuals. Pulse is also developing original intellectual property for Jamie across TV and digital.
Pulse and Marc Silver have created a visual synergy throughout all of the content, creating a coherent and integrated visual theme that links the various media aspects. The image of the exploding piano, a representation of Jamie’s energy and his dynamic relationship with music, is one that is echoed throughout the content. The first video for The Pursuit is directed by Kit Lynch-Robinson, and it centres on this visual set-piece.
Reports that Cullum exploded the piano through the power of Jazz are, as yet, unfounded.DOCTOR WHO?!?
OK, it’s not really ad news, but the clever ad-brained folk at Red Bee Media have gone and done a new Doctor Who logo, and we think it looks pretty snazzy.

We saw the new Doctor Who in The Endurance on Berwick Street once. What an odd fellow.

WMDELIGHTFUL
We don’t normally showcase trailers on The Reel, but this new britflick from writer/director David Holroyd had us fascinated. A fictional account but based almost entirely on real events and filmed on covert surveillance and CCTV cameras, WMD pieces together the story of Alex, an ordinary MI6 desk officer, who discovers deliberate flaws in the evidence being gathered to invade Iraq. In an attempt to expose the truth Alex finds himself drawn into a shadowy and dangerous world. A political Blair Witch? Could be!
…AND FINALLY
We don’t know WHAT this is
Cheers to The Dane for sending it to us!!
